The Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research
Water scarcity impedes human survival and potential by instigating conflicts, compromising human health, and promoting desertification. Due to global changes and population growth, water shortage is more acute than ever, and water quality is rapidly deteriorating. In this current context, the Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research (ZIWR) faculty members carry out cutting-edge multidisciplinary research in hydrology, water microbiology, and water treatment and serve as leaders in graduate education in water sciences. The ZIWR is a vibrant young research institute within the Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev’s Sde Boker Campus. It was established in 2002 through the generous donation of Mr. Roy Zuckerberg. The ZIWR has since become a leading water institute in Israel through its dynamic and innovative working environment, hosting approximately 20 researchers, 17 staff members, and 100 graduate students. The ZIWR announces a call for Tenure-track Positions (at the lecturer or senior lecturer level, (equivalent to assistant professor). These positions target emerging water/environmental issues and utilize a new/developing set of tools that will allow better understanding of global water/environment-related concerns. Position 1: The ZIWR invites applications for a tenure-track position in one of the following topics: (i) surface science (fundamental research relevant to membrane/desalination, adsorption, catalysis, and other water treatment technologies); (ii) micropollutants and/or nanomaterials in water and the environment, from both fundamental and applicative perspectives; (iii) resource recovery and environmental assessment of engineering technologies. (i) Surface science: This topic includes fundamental research that is relevant to and often essential for the understanding of membrane/desalination adsorption and other water treatment technologies, and for the development of new membranes. This research topic was identified as being complementary to and synergistic with existing research on membranes (e.g., fouling, scaling). Preference will be given here to candidates with modeling capabilities. This position could also be relevant for hydrologists and microbiologists who study solute, particle, and microbial transport processes in aquatic ecosystems. (ii) Micropollutants and nanomaterials in the water and environment: This emerging topic addresses global water concerns impacting both human and ecosystem health. It comprises many fundamental questions on the fate and impact of micropollutants (organic and inorganic) in the environment. Similarly, nanomaterials research encompasses a very wide range of fundamental and applied questions on their fate, importance, and potential usage. (iii) Resource recovery: Recovery of resources such as nutrients and energy from water and marginal water is increasingly important in a world facing population growth and dwindling natural resources. Position 2: The ZIWR invites applications for a tenure-track position in one of the following topics: (i) Aquatic/environmental microbiology: The successful candidate will be aמ environmental microbiologist who studies microorganisms and/or viruses within aquatic environments, such as freshwater, marine, brackish ecosystems, and engineered water systems. The candidate is expected to study topics such as the presence, distribution, behavior, and impact of microbes/viruses in water bodies, assessing their interactions with other organisms and the surrounding environment and their potential effects on public health, aquatic life, and ecosystems. The research is complementary to and synergistic with studies on the impact of microorganisms in various water sources, both from water quality and water treatment perspectives. (ii) Advanced aquatic/environmental monitoring: The successful candidate will work on the development of sensors for online water/marginal waters quality monitoring, including in-situ molecular sensors or optical sensors. Future applications of these techniques can assist in detecting emerging contaminants and pathogens in treated and natural waters. The candidate may also explore the potential of combining in-situ spectroscopy and remotely sensed reflectance for using optical water quality monitoring in large rivers, lakes, and marine bodies to scale up from point observations to large water bodies and monitor algal blooms, sediment load, water temperature, and oil spills. Similarly, the candidate may focus on molecular sensors such as electrochemical, biological, IoT-based, and/or bioluminescence-based sensors that are paving the way for more accurate, real-time, and cost-effective water quality monitoring solutions and are essential to understanding many hydrological, environmental, and microbial processes in the aquatic environment. * Application Open Until September 30, 2024
